Map ... copied ... from an old plat of Charlestown dated 1671 ... ; [ca. 187u?] [manuscript map] / by the copiest ... Jos[eph] Samson, scribe. [ca. 187-]

Hand drawn copy of map of south Atlantic coast of North America, ca. 1671, depicting coastline from Cape Hatteras (North Carolina) to St. Augustine (Florida); includes inset map of Charleston Harbor, with accurate identification of original site of Charles Town Landing on the west bank at a bend of the Ashley River, northwest of the present site of Charleston, S.C. This map identifies inlets and other features of the shoreline by archaic spellings or former names; several back country landmarks appear, including rivers, ponds, and the "Apalajsaua" [Appalachian] Mountain Range, along with a simple image of Europeans and Native Americans. Includes photograph of W.G. DeSaussure, who by the 1870s was known for his historical essays on South Carolina, along with dedication: "This map in every particular copied with a pen from an old plat of Charleston dated 1671, found in a book of plats of various parts of U.S.A. printed in London in 1671, the property of Maj. Ja[me]s T. Welsman, is presented to Gen[era]l Wilmot G. DeSaussure by the copiest (his friend) Jos[eph] Samson"; Samson is believed to have copied this map from a volume compiled by John Ogilby titled: America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World ... A copy of this map appeared in the 1880 edition of the Charleston Yearbook; as published, that version incorrectly sited the location of the original Charlestown settlement at the mouth of the Ashley River [downstream of its actual location], a site identified on this manuscript map as "Coming Point."
